Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Three weeks ago I went to the ER because of sever lower abdamon pain that was doubling me over. The Doctor determined that it was Diverticulosis. He gave me two Antibiotics ( Metronidazole, Ciprofloxacin) and a pain killer (hydrocodone). I went home and things got a lot better. After the 10 days of the antibiotics. Things started to get painful again. This time higher up on the left side. I have been taking Cephalexin for the last three days and nothing seems to help the pain. It is not decreasing. What should I be doing?

Brief Answer:
Investigations to get a proper diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read and understood your history.
When the pain is so severe, the causes need to be found out, a proper diagnosis alone can get you the proper treatment.
Since your taking the medicines as advised by your Doctor have not helped you to avoid recurrence, the main issue is to get an appropriate diagnosis.

I would advise you the following investigations to get a proper diagnosis:
Investigations:
*Routine blood investigations like Complete blood picture, blood sugar, urea, creatinine, liver function tests, thyroid function tests.
*Urine -routine and microscopy
*Stool: routine, microscopy, occult blood, culture and sensitivity.
*Ultrasonography of abdomen,
*Colonoscopy
*CT scan of the abdomen.

These will help to get a proper diagnosis to get you the correct line of treatment.

Please get these done and let us know the results so that we can discuss further.
