Suggest Treatment For Severe And Frequent Vomiting In A Child

Question: My baby vomits a lot. If he burps, the amount of vomit would be less and would be thick (kinda curd-type) but if he does not burp, it will be frequent vomit and will take out most of the milk intake. So, is this normal?
Brief Answer:
Proper burping is important
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Let me first ask whether the child is exclusively breast fed or whether he is formula fed. Most formula milks are cow milk based and hence difficult to digest. This makes the child prone to throwing up. Switching back to breast milk should take care of the problem.
You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air taken causes distention and vomiting. Proper burping will ensure its escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe, thus providing relief.
Let me know if I could help further.

Thank you Dr. Diptanshu for taking out your time to look into this and responding to my question.
My son is totally on mother's milk and is not on any formula milk but my wife consumes half glass of cow milk thrice a day which might have led to it. We do try to burp him by holding in the position as mentioned above for 5 mins but sometimes he does not burp till an hour. We will continue to do it.
So I wanted to follow-up and check whether it's a serious matter or should we be mindful of anything else like diet or medicines, please share your thoughts & advise.

Brief Answer:
Burping is essential.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.
Let me assure you that it is not a serious matter. It is good to know that the child is exclusively breast fed. However, the burping needs to be done for 15-20 mins and not merely 5 mins. The junction of foodpipe and stomach in babies is quite lax and therefore the milk tends to regurgitate back in lying position. It does not matter whether you get to hear the burping sound.
