Suggest Treatment For Severe Anxiety

Question: Hi, iam having severe anxiety problem..i have become so anxious that , i am even unable to go and consult a doctor. but, i want to consult the dotor, so please help me to lower my anxiety atleast a little so that i can go and see a doctor.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM

You have anxiety disorder and have persistent anxiety to such severity that you are not able to visit a doctor. Such complaints are common in anxiety, as anxiety is severe so there is need for medicines. Medicines like benzodiazepines can help to reduce your severe anxiety and you will become compliant to medicines. Clonazepam or Lorazepam can be used for short term. Common Antianxiety drugs are SSRIs like Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Escitalopram etc. These medicines when taken for regular basis help to reduce the anxiety. I would advise you to consult a Psychiatrist for proper prescription.

As you have taken homeopathy treatment but it didn't result in improvement. The treatment is claimed to be beneficial in Psychiatric disorders but it is not supported by research studies. You are having fear to visit a doctor till then you can try non medicinal methods like Behavior Therapy. In behavior therapy relaxation exercises help in reducing anxiety. Breathing exercises, yoga, Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) have efficacy equal to medicine. You can take help of YouTube to learn these methods.

Apart from this I would advise you to follow some life style changes to reduce anxiety-

- Take diet rich in proteins and complex carbohydrates and low in fats and refined carbohydrates. This will reduce anxiety in long term.

- Reduce intake of excess tea, coffee and carbonated drinks.

- Have meals at time and sleep for at least 8 hours.

- Exercise daily for at least half hour, this will result in release of endorphins and will reduce anxiety.

- In case of severe anxiety or panic have a glass of cold water and drink it slowly in about 2 minutes.

Follow these changes and your anxiety will reduce in intensity and then visit a Psychiatrist.

Hello Dr. Bishnoi!

Thank you for the detailed answer and advice.
It really gives me some hope. i will follow your advice and after my anxiety level comes down i will consult the doctor.

But, before that i have to visit the passport office to apply for the renewal of my passport. at that time i have to go throgh all the steps of giving the bio metrics and pose for a picture. so when iam in sever panic my haed shakes a little and i am affraid i cant give a pose for the picture.

i must go and apply for the passport by the end of this month. so please suggest some temperory medicines to reduce the panic level for that moment.

i will definately follow your advice and consult a doctor very soon, but help with this temporary situation.

It is common in severe anxiety disorder that individual can't even move out of home or familiar surroundings. Bad thing about anxiety is that individual is aware of his clinical situation still he remain helpless and can't do anything.

You have anxiety to visit a passport office and about steps involved there. See to relieve this anxiety you can go for systematic desensitisation technique. In this method individual is gradually exposed to increased anxiety provoking stimulus starting from lowest anxiety provoking. Like for your case, just imagine what are main things that can provoke anxiety in you by going to passport office. Imagine that stimuli again and again and if you develop anxiety start relaxation exercises. Once you become less anxious then read the details of passport office again and again and again imagine about anxiety. With time you will feel that anxiety is reducing. Procedure at passport offices are very simple and just you have to reach with required documents at time. You will definitely not develop anxiety there.

Please consult your doctor and start anti anxiety medicines. You will become better with time.
