Suggest Treatment For Severe Arthritis

Posted on Wed, 23 Mar 2016
Question: I have had swelling and pain in my right knee since before Thanksgiving. I saw an orthopedic surgeon the week before Christmas and received an injection in my knee. I had X-rays and was told I have arthritis. The injection did not make a lot of difference, but my knee has slowly improved as long as I restrict my activities and do not do a lot of walking. I do not like to take medicine but do take Aleve when the pain is worse. What should I do next. I really do not want to have surgery or take pain medication.

Brief Answer:
Various options given below

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

Early to moderately severe arthritis can be treated conservatively to some degree.

Other than medication and cortisone injection, you can also get Hyaluronic acid injection into the knee joint. This helps in the regeneration of the damaged cartilage in the knees in arthritis. It offers better relief than a cortisone shot.

You can also perform non-loading exercises and physiotherapy to increase the strength of the muscles surrounding the knee to reduce the swift appearance of deformities and offer better control over your gait. Cycling at the gym, swimming, yoga and aerobics are perfect choices.

Focusing on weight loss to remain fit is of prime importance. Hence, diet control by a good Diet chart after consultation with your Dietician will help above all other means.

Wearing knee cap of braces shall aid to gait control and engage in easier gait. Avoid squatting, cross leg sitting, climbing stairs, kneeling. Eat healthy. Keep well hydrated.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
