Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain Post A Cesarean Section

default
Posted on Sat, 27 Aug 2016
Question: My wife delivered a baby 3 months ago and it was a c section with epidural. Reason for c section was prolonged labour from morning 7 AM to night 11:00 PM and there was no dilation. Epidural was taken at around 7 PM evening and labour was induced to see if there can be any progress in the dilation. Since there was no progress further, c section was done at 11:00 PM with the same Epidural which was given and the Epidural catheter was removed next day evening.

Now she is complaining about the back pain where the epidural was given. She had no complaints of back pain 8 weeks postpartum, pain started after 8 weeks. She has tightness and severe pain in the area where epidural was given. Pain intensity is same throughout the day and there is no pain in legs, only in the back. While performing 'pelvic tilt' exercise, pain is felt more, where as while performing 'pelvic bridge' pain is not there.

So, my question is, is this pain linked to epidural? if so what has to be done to treat this?

nothing to worry about

Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..
How was your day?

Hope this message finds you in good health.
I have gone through your query in detail and understand your concern.

I generally see many cases like this at my clinic.and there is a general misconception that this pain is due to the epidural injection.

To some extent, this is correct, because while giving the injection, the covering over the spinal cord is punctured, many a times, the needle hits the surrounding ligaments and bones, as this is a blind procedure.

in post partum phase, due to lactation and breast feeding, lots of calcium from her body is lost causing more weakness of spine and aggravating pain.

morover,if while breast feeding, she is sitting for long period,it will cause stress on her spine.

i will suggest a few things to her.

1. let her use lumbosacral belt for spinal support
2. take calcium tablets for 6 months minimum.
3. ask her to feed the baby in lying down position

hot fomentation, local gel will be enoough for pain relief.

if at all, the symptoms increase, get a spine xray done

she should eventually get back to normal in coming few days.Nothing to worry about, as long as i am there to help you.

Hi Dr Mahaveer,

Thanks for your quick and positive response on my question. Also, your experience in treating these kind of issues gives more confidence to me.

You mentioned in your answer that "To some extent, this is correct, because while giving the injection, the covering over the spinal cord is punctured, many a times, the needle hits the surrounding ligaments and bones, as this is a blind procedure."

Will this be recovered automatically after sometime?

Thanks,
Subhash

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Welcome back

yes, it will definitely recover on its own..

the minor injuries that i mentioned which occur during giving epidural anesthesia to ligaments and bones in the spine, heal up spontaneously.

but she will experience some amount of on/off minor pain during this initial one year when the climate changes occur.

make sure she takes a calcium rich diet - milk, fruits, raagi, dry fruits, and calcium tablets , till 2 months after she stops breast feeding.

later on she can continue doing back yoga exercises to maintain a healthy spine.
She will be fine for the rest of her life.. Nothing to worry
