Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain
My physio tells me it's the facet joint on my right side.
Weak lower back due to weak muscles
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
I am sorry to hear about the back pain.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Good to know MRI was normal.
2. Facet abnormalities might not be present as there is no neural pain in legs or waist region. Additionally, the MRI would have shown any abnormalities.
3. As the MRI is normal, it could be more skeletal muscle pain due to weak lower back. Golf could have increased the load on the lower back.
4. Strengthening back muscles through back exercises, which your physio would have advised, and if overweight, weight reduction should help.
5. If pain is moderate to severe, rest is essential and later on slowly back exercises and golf can be started.
Hope it helps.

Can I take a pain killer now as I have completed the dosage prescribed by my Doctor?
Thanks,
Liam
Yes, painkiller can be taken

Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking again.
Yes, painkiller can be taken for comfort. Make sure you take it after food to avoid gastritis.
For exercises, initially, while lying on your stomach face down on firm surface, prop yourself on elbows below and try to lift up. This will stretch your back. Hold it for five seconds. Repeat ten times.
After warm up, start putting your arms in air, in handsup mode or in flying style, so that pressure is on back muscles. Even legs can be lifted alternatively.
You can find easily plenty of videos on YouTube. However, start slowly.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I did the exercise you recommended and did get some relief and I intend to do regular exercises to try and beat this condition.
When is the best time to do those exercises? Morning and evening!
I have applied a heat patch to the affected area and this appears to be working too although it maybe only temporary .
Liam
Morning 7-8 am

Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking again.
1. I would recommend use in morning, before breakfast, at least, after one hour you wake up, so that your body is warm enough and you avoid spraining yourself.
2. If possible, do on a empty stomach, or after very small liquid diet. Back exercises will increase abdominal pressure and can cause regurgitation feeling.
3. Do it for at least 15 min. Slowly start from 5 min and then can increase it. However, do not rush. Slowly strengthen it. Slow movements essential. Slower, the better for muscles.
4. Warmth will increase blood circulation, which will remove pain chemicals. Be careful, not to cause burns.
Avoid sudden lower back movements for at least 15 days. After that, there should be not much of a problem. Continue exercises for ever, as it will strengthen the back bones too.
Hope it helps.
