Question: I am an 83 year old male, 5' 11', 186 lbs. I never had any major illness nor take any prescribed meds until XXXXXXX 2016. Severe chest pain convinced me that I was suffering a heart attack. ER tests revealed Esophageal Stricture, inflamation, and Hiatal Hernia. I have had two balloon procedures and prescribed Omeprazole, 20mg one per day. My question. Never having taken any drugs, I am leery of beginning now. I read the Omeprazole should not be a long term med. There is risk of bacterial pneumonia, increased likelihood of osteoporosis, and possible adverse effects of the kidney. Will have another balloon procedure October 2017.

Omeprazole belongs to class of drug called proton pump inhibitors.Usually PPI's are one of the safest drugs available in the market.
Though side effect mentioned by you are seen in patients but overall its a rare case scenario.Most of the patients tolerate PPI's very well with minimum or no side effect.
Rare things are rare,so i would suggest you not to google about PPI's too much.Practically they are among the safest class of drugs available in market.
