Question: Sir, my son is 2years 10months and he has been suffering from cold( running nose) from last one month and some times, ear pain. He also opens up mouth and seems like breathes with mouth since childhood. We met pediatrician and he gave medicines ibugesic plus, montair LC, Nasal spray. we used for 4 weeks. Now he suggested ENT specialist. Now, ENT specialist prescribed Cefprozil for oral suspension, Deflazacort oral suspension for 1 week. If it doesn't cure, then he said surgical procedure to be done. to remove the fluid. Now we are worried whether he is getting treated correctly and Is it advisable to go for surgery at such small age? Please suggest us is it curable with only medicines?why did he get this issue? Please give your valuable suggestion

Brief Answer:
Adenoiditis with middle ear infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for putting up the query
your child is having adenoiditis with eustachian tube blockage. Adenoids are very common in kids.
Give the child an anticold syrup and an anti inflammatory syrup like ibugesic plus. also put a decongestant nasal drops. Don't put any ear drops. Try to give the child steam inhalation if possible.
Do So this for at least 5 days. This will definitely help and you won't need to go for any surgical procedure.
Stop deflezacort.
This problem is very common in children and should be tried to treat with medicines. If medicines don't seem to work at all, tympanotomy may be required.
Any further questions are always welcome.
Thanks and regards

The ENT told us that there is a lot of fluid in both his ears which has also thickened over the time .
In the past 2 months the pediatrician has already prescribed Levolin,Relent+,MontairLC as well as Ibugesic + for earpain. However even after completion of the course of each one of the medicine, neither his ear pain nor the runny nose(watery as well as white mucus)have come down.Hence the ENT suggested defcort and Refzil-o for 7 days as the last medicinal treatment to be tried for him.In case this also doesnt work well,he may have to surgically remove the fluid as it has been in the ear for more than one month.

Brief Answer:
Adenoiditis with middle ear infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the information.
If the fluid is there for a month, it might need to be surgically removed by tympanotomy. put nasal drops regularly for few days and give him a combination of levocetrizine and phenylepherine syrup 5 ml three times a day. This will improve his nasal and ear symptoms both. Give the child a lolly pop or anything else to suck on. This will also help to open up the tube.
The advise given by your doctor is absolutely right but I feel from my Clinical experience that such cases can be treated medically.
Any further questions are always welcome.
Thanks and regards
