Question: My husband XXXXXXX age 69, having been diagnosed with prostrate problems 2-3 years ago - recently (yesterday) developed a 'big ball' of bowel material that he cannot seem to move, along with only dribbles each time he has tried to urinate. We have tried Dulcalox, laxative powder prescribed by physician, and other
'parmecuticals', including an enema with little to no success. The 'ball' of fecal matter just will not move. This has been gong on for 24-36 hours now; he has an appointment with is physician tomorrow morning, but in meantime, were wondering if he should be taking another enema or two? Thank you very much for your information and possible answer. He is in a lot of pain and now that e has tried forcing himself so much, he has started some hemoroid action at the top with a fair amount of blood.

Brief Answer:
You need to evacuate hard fecal matter manually .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your husband has developed distention of lower abdomen due to hard fecal matter being impacted in his rectul ..since most of the manuvers like enema and oral stoll softners have failed him to evacuate his bowel the only option is to remove hard stools manually .

Following maneuver help to empty his bowel
1) Wear a sterile latex rubber glove on your hand .
2) Lubricate his anal canal with adequate quantity of Xylocaine jelly
3) Wait for 5 minutes and remove hard fecal matters with gentle care and keep one Dulcolax Rectal Suppository in anus .This will, help to evacuate hard stools completely and help to resolve his problem .

Ask him to drink more water and take stool softener like Softovac granules as a routine to avoid such situation in future .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

What about his inability to urinate. XXXXXXX was diagnosed of prostate problems about 5 years ago - he has had 1 hydrocordodiazide - only .25 mg - probably should have more or perhaps a lazix?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Prostate problem can be dealt with after this agonizing episode.

Detailed Answer:
hello
Thanks for query .

Dribbling urination that he has could be either due to pressure of the hard stools over bladder neck causing obstruction or primarily due to enlarged prostate .

It is likely that he will urinate once his bowels are completely evacuated .If he fails to urinate after evacuation of bowel you will need to visit ER for catheterization and empty the bladder followed by consulting a qualified Urologist for evaluation and further treatment ..

For God sake Do not give Lasix at all.

Thanks and Regards,
Dr.Patil.
