Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation In An Infant After Switching From Breastfeed To Fruits And Vegetables

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Apr 2024
Question: My granddaughter, 10 months old, exclusively breast fed for 6+ months, now eating solids and having bad time with constipation needing glycerin suppositories. She eats fresh fruits and veggies as well as protein. He mom uses almond flour to bake for her. Could this nut flour be contributing to her digestive issues? Is 16-20 ounces of breast milk with 3-4 oz water in sippy cup enough fluid per day? What else can be done to help her with the constipation ( real small hard stools and difficult to pass)?

Brief Answer:
Give lactulose syrup and dietary modifications

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your question in detail and I know that you are very concerned about your child but don't worry about it.

Passing hard stools could be due to infection or diet related.
In my opinion, you should give
- syrup lactulose 4 ml three times a day for 3 days
- syrup ofloxacin (5 ml =50 mg) 2.5 ml three times a day for 3 days
- glycerine suppository on sos basis

In dietary modifications, you should give
- full cream milk
- continue breastfeeding
- add little butter in every feed
- give all vegetables and fruits
- try to give some salad also if child takes

Review after 2 days.
I hope this will help you.
Wishing your child good health.
Take care.
