Question: For a week I have had a phlegmy chest cold that keeps me awake with coughig. I cough all day. I've tried Zyrtec and Flonase with no effect, so it's probably not allergy. Nose a little runny, bowels looser and lighter in color. Can you suggest any medication that might help.? Thank you. XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Lower respiratory tract infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, it appears to be a lower respiratory tract infection. You can take combination anti histamines including levocetirizine and desloratidine. A pinch of vicks in hot water can be placed and the steam be inhaled. Expectorant medication such as periton or cough medication like hydrelline can also be useful. You can wait it out for three more days with these remedies. If the symptoms persist then you would require a physical examination and workup including blood counts, chest x ray, sputum AFB / culture (based on your locality) to prescribe the appropriate antibiotics if an infection is diagnosed.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
