Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough, Runny Nose And Fever In Child

My daughter is 1 Year, 6 Months and has been suffering from bad cough, runny XXXXXXX accompanied by fever (range from 100 to 102) till today. We went to our Paedetric. He suggested using Crocin syrup for the Fever. If the fever didn't come down, than followed by Maftal-P and if still not felt better, then Ibugesic. For Cough, Mucolite was suggested. We tried this for a couple of days. Her fever came down to 100-99 with Crocin but her cough just won't go. We revisited the Paedetric and this time he suggested XXXXXXX Junior as the decongestant. From the last 2 days we are giving her XXXXXXX Junior but she is extremely sleepy and full of drowsiness. Yesterday she slept at 11.40PM and woke up at 1.00PM. again slept at 3.30PM and got up at 6.30PM, Slept at 8.30PM and we forcefully woke her up at 9.45PM. She is now again slept at 12.30AM.
We are very worried for her as her body temperature hasn't come down to 97-98 range and neither her cough has become better.
We would like to know whats going on and why our daughter's cough / fever woudn't leave. Our Paedetric has checked her eyes, ear, vagina, throat to check for any bacterial infections and suggested that this is Viral Fever. She is down from 10th Sep and today is 14th Sep and I was assuming Viral fever lasts only for 4 days.
Please suggest what is the course of action? Shall we change XXXXXXX Junior and replace with other medicine? Doctor has asked us to do C.B.C and Malaria test. Is it recommended to do it and as parents what are we supposed to do now?
Thanks,
XXXX
Viral infections can cause high fever and usually take 5-7 days to resolve
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone very carefully through your query and fully understand your concerns. The cough and fever that we commonly suffer from, are caused due to certain viral infections and they have some allergic reactions associated. Your doctor has been thinking on the right lines and has been managing it properly. Since such fevers are often associated with high rise of temperature, proper control of temperature is a must. Meftal P is more effective than Ibugesic which in turn is more effective than Crocin. In such a case, rather than using Crocin, I would prefer keeping using only Meftal P as and when required. The dose of Meftal P is 5 mg/kg/dose (syrup contains 50 mg/5 ml) to be given at a minimum interval of 6 hours. It will give you more control over the temperature.
Such infections as well as allergic reactions and hence antiallergics like XXXXXXX Junior but the only demerit of such medications is the excessive sleepiness as in case of your child. But this is not something that you need to worry about. It is harmless and will go away in a few days of discontinuing the medication. If apprehensive you can discontinue XXXXXXX Junior. You need not give any other medicine of this category since the others too are likely to have a similar effect. Rather, giving steam inahaltion is a better alternative which can provide relief. Water in the form of vapour can reach deep inside and helps in diluting the mucus.
You need not panic. Such viral infections are common and irrespective of treatment it takes 5-7 days to resolve. Till then you need to be patient. It would be good to get her blood tested for malaria and CBC which will confirm that the fever is not due to something else. Please be patient. It should be ok back again soon.
Feel free to write back in case of further queries.
Regards

Other thing which we have always noticed is, whenever she gets new tooth she gets cough and fever. We checked her mouth and indeed she is getting more than 4 tooth in different locations. Can this be the root cause of her suffering?
Thanks again for being prompt in responding. Its 4AM and we are awake as her temperature is rising again to 100 :-(
Hope she gets well soon.
You can give nebulization as required
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.
You can definitely nebulize her with Duolin. You can give it every 2-3 hours and then gradually increase the gap as required. In case wheezing or respiratory distress is not present, instead of using Duolin, you can give nebulization with normal saline (can be prepared for this purpose at home by mixing three pinches of salt picked with three fingers to be put in 200 ml of water). Steam inhalation serves the same purpose.
I do not think the teething to be related to her getting the fever.
I would hope for her quick recovery. Try to get some sleep.
Regards
