Question: I have severe abdominal cramping with diarrhea and dry heaves. 24 hours now. Concerned about the cramping. Is this a sign of something dangerous? I am presently using a hot water bottle for the pain. Sipping tiny bits of water.

Brief Answer:
This might have been caused by allergy!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this diarrhea and dry heaves that you have reported. I will like you to shed more light on this diarrhea like frequency, nature of stools and whether there is any blood in the stools or not. This would be very helpful in providing helpful recommendations.

Your symptoms might have be caused by intolerance/allergy to something in food. If this happens often, try to match your symptoms with food intake to identify what might be responsible for this.

If you can support the cramps, there is no reason to get to worried. Serious abdominal conditions would often present with severe pain that always requires immediate medical attention. For the cramps, I recommend you take Bisacodyl at doses recommended by your pharmacist. This would further control the pains.

Diarrhea never kills, dehydration does. Drink as much water as possible in order to prevent excessive fluid loss and dehydration.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you. To give you more information I had 1/2 chicken salad sandwich yesterday at the hospital cafeteria. The cramping started right after. Stools are now watery. No blood that I can detect. I have IBS with constipation which is why I am fairly unfamiliar with what is happening to me now. Could this be food poisoning?

Brief Answer:
High suspicion of food poisoning!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

With the added information, this is classical for food poisoning. Continue with fluids and all would be okay. Unless otherwise, there is no need for further medical intervention at this time.

Feel free to contact me is something else comes up. I wish you well.
