Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing to us.
Fir exact diagnosis detail history and mental status examination to be done by a psychiatrist. At this moment we can call your situation resistant severe depression.
To provide more comments on your diagnosis I need to know your detail symptoms history.
Whatever is your husband is doing is right according to treatment protocol. For patient with suicidal attempt, we generally recommend that for initial period patient must not be left alone and medicines must be given by close relative. This is only to prevent further attempt as data suggests that person who attempts suicide can do it repeatedly in near future after recent attempt.
In severe depression with suicidal ideas electro convulsive therapy (ECT) is very useful approach. And from medication point of view lithium is the only drug with proven anti suicidal effects.
As you are on lamictal and tegretal there may be possibility of bipolar depression and in that case also ECT and lithium are effective.
You can discuss above options with your treating doctor.
Hope this answer is helpful , feel free to discuss further.
regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
