default
Posted on Fri, 26 May 2017
Question: I've had a head cold all week, ears have been plugged for days without pain, until yesterday the right one became painful, very painful, tried a heating pad and after several hours pain started to subside with a bloody fluid draining out over the past night. Did i rupture the ear drum? Should I see a doc today. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Needs an otolaryngologist review for otoscopy and tympanogram

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to HealthcareMagic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be as you have suspected to be a damage to ear drum due to repeated blowing or pressure differences but can also be spread of some infective pathology through eustachian tube into the ear cavity. In any case, a review by an otolaryngologist or ENT specialist is inevitable as it may need detailed otoscope examination as well as augiogram if needed and antibiotics course due to the kind of discharge as you have explained and physical trauma or damage to ear drum needs to be ruled out.

The choice of antibiotics is usually broad spectrum covering gram postive bacteria as well as anaerobes, however a pus or bloody discharge's culture and sensitivity may guide to narrow down the exact cause and hence to be treated accordingly.

Using anti inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen and anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine will ne helpful. Don't pour anything into ear canal and just place dry clean sterilised Cotton swabs for the discharge and keep replacing frequently.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards. .
