HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
PPI inhibit the production of acid in the stomach but would not help to reduce the acid already present.
This is the reason that they may take 5 to 7 days of consistent use before they have an effect.
For the first the few days some persons may need to combine the PPI with another medication such as pepcid or zantac.
She can consider using a higher dose of the PPI for a few days or using another one since they have slight differences (nexium is one of the better ones).
Some persons take the PPI twice daily for a few days for a maximum effect.
In addition to using the nexium twice daily along with pepcid or zantac, she would need to avoid spicy, acidic foods, use only small quantities at a time.
If the discomfort continues then she may need to be assessed by physical examination and possibly imaging eg barium study
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
