Question: I have been very ill for a while...they found that I have a ecoli infectio
Ll think I have a systemic fungal infection. I had a liver transplant 5 ago
..if things were not bad enough my husband who had a photo graphic memory and is starting to forget things...he just does not seem to be himself....he has always been difficult to live with...and it did take much for him to lose his temper...but now living with him has become unberable... Initially I I thought he was exhibiting the early signs of dementiat there is...but after I found I had an ecoli infection... I
Believe more than likely he has an infection too but has yet to go to the doctor...could an ecoli infection cause behavioral changes? My husband is 74 and has always been in relatively good health.

Yes, an E coli urinary tract infection could account for behavioral changes. I strongly recommend he visit a primary care doctor for a urinalysis and basic bloodwork including a complete blood count to determine if he has an infection that needs treatment with an antibiotic.

I am not sure if I you received my follow up response... I don't think they found it in my urinary track..i think they found it in my stools. Even my general doctor said it was normal for it to show up in the stools...but I guess sometimes it is not normal...maybe it is the level found?

E coli is regularly and normally found in the stool as part of the normal gut flora and symbiosis that exists between our gut and bacteria. E coli in the stool would NOT account for behavioral changes. I have a high level of suspicion for initial stages of dementia. I highly recommend consultation with a neurologist to test for dementia.
