Suggest Treatment For Severe Hay Fever

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: Hi. My 18-year old son has severe hay fever, very bad this year in the UK. He is currently taking fexofenadine 120mg/day, a corticosteroid nasal spray and sodium cromoglycate eye drops 4x/day, on the advice of his GP but they don't seem to be working well. We have tried Cetirizine and Loratidine one-a-day tablets before but they don't work well for him either. We have not tried taking the antihistamines in combination yet as we don't know if it is safe - is it?. We have not tried Piriton as he has to drive every day. Can you give me some advice please. Many thanks. XXXX

Brief Answer:
The present medications require some modifications

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through query and I do feel your son requires some modifications in the treatment regimen.

1. Instead of fexofenadine 120mg, try using 180mg. In uncontrolled Hayfever the dose can be increased upto 180mg and once the symptoms get controlled it can be reduced.

2. Also, he can try a short course of oral steroids. This will definitely benefit him at this phase.

3. Consider changing the corticosteroid spray to a more potent one (such as fluticasone or momentasone).

4. Finally, advise him to avoid those things which can aggravate his allergy.

Hope this answer will be helpful. Revert back to me, if you have any further queries.

Regards
