Question: I have never experienced bad headaches in my life. But the last two months experienced pain in eyes ,back of head, neck and tingling pins and needles feeling in top of head. I also on occasion have upper tooth pain. Had my eyes checked, had mri of neck showing degenerative disc disease and also with your team reccomendation received two steroid shots in occipital nerve area which only helped for about four days. Pain is getting worse do not know what next step should I take? Thank you Don Prybil

Brief Answer:
If occipital neuralgia, nerves stimulation and surgery should be considered

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

You refer to occipital neuralgia as a diagnosis, right?

If so, then since nerve blocks failed to improve symptoms, next step is surgery (microvascular decomprression).

Another possibility of treatment about occipital neuralgia is occipital nerve stimulation with electrical impulses.

If occipital neuralgia is not the diagnosis achieved by your Doctor, then headaches that changed in intensity warrant brain imaging studies (MRI), before deciding further treatment possibilities.

These issues should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

I do not know for sure that occipital neuralgia is the answer for sure. symptoms also are very loud hissing and ringing in ears, and bone pain in jaws with and sinus pain all kind of scattered out in head and neck both. It started out as very dull pain on both sides of neck. It was dull and annoying . Then it started to proceed up into back of head and now there is not a day without it. Seems to be worse in morning after lifting neck off pillow. Pain med do not seem to help that much being oxycodone or hydromorphome. Like i said when mri of my neck was done it showed degenerative disc disease. It is very maddening to have ears ringing and hissing 24 - 7 days a week with pain in jaw and teeth area. Feel very light headed at times. Sorry for all the symtoms but this is what I have been dealing with for over two months consistently. Do not like idea of surgery on neck. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Brain MRI is needed for further evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for the clarifications.

Since there are other symptoms like ringing in the ears, lightheadedness, then there is need for a brain MRI, besides the one done on neck, before deciding the further treatment steps.

This is needed to evaluate/exclude any brain condition (vascular lesions eg.) that may cause your symptoms.

I suggest you to discus about these issues with your treating Doctor.

Hope I helped you.

Wishing you good health.
