Suggest Treatment For Severe Joint And Knee Pain

Question: Hello, Dr. Prof. XXXXXXX (I understand that in XXXXXXX the surname is given first and then the first name follows it) and thank you for following up with me. My lower leg is doing fairly well as long as I don't walk too much (which aggravates it), but I am trying to do stretches as often as I remember to. Going without my brace entirely was making my knee joint feel worse, though, due to my weight being on the part which has virtually no cartilage, so I am wearing it again which shifts my weight over to the part where I still have some cartilage, but not as many hours per day. So far that seems to be helping my knee to feel better, and not aggravating the calf muscles too much (again, as long as I don't walk too much), so I'll keep on this way for a time and see how I do. I do some exercises at home, which I think help too.
Best wishes to you. XXXXXXX Storm

Hello, Dr. Saha. Thank you for clarifying the name custom in eastern XXXXXXX I am and have for many years been a disciple of the teachings of XXXXXXX Yogananda, a Bengali who was born in XXXXXXX and raised in Calcutta. A wonderful illumined master and who went to Spirit in 1952.

I do have another question. I have for several days now had a really bad upper respiratory virus which has brought on acute bronchitis, to which I am subject, and have had it several times in recent years. I have been to the doctor, who prescribed a course of prednisone to calm the inflammation in my bronchial tubes, which seems to be quite bad, giving a fluttering whenever I go into a bad coughing fit. He also prescribed cough gel caps, which help a little. I am taking both prescriptions diligently. I am also using a blend of pure therapy grade essential oils on my chest, and breathing in hot moist air from a clean wet washcloth in the morning. I wonder, do you have any suggestions of something else I might try to help me get through this? I am taking a lot of Vitamin C, which I always do, in addition to my other normal meds and supplements, but if you have any other ideas, I would appreciate knowing what else I could try. I have had to miss the Easter holiday celebrations this year because of being so sick. Thank you so much. XXXXXXX Storm

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation is the mainstay of treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Glad to hear back from you. It is good to know that you have been a disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda. He was born XXXXXXX Lal XXXXXXX and his surname was XXXXXXX prior to his renunciation.

Coming to your problem, you need to take steam inhalation. Water in form of vapor reaches deep inside and helps in diluting the thickened mucus and thus provides relief. This is the mainstay of treatment. Other things would be secondary. Prednisolone is given when the infection is bad but it should not be continued for long and needs to be gradually tapered off. I do not suppose that applying essential oils on your chest would help. The oils will not help but rather chest physiotherapy (a certain way of massaging the chest) should indeed help. Taking citrus fruits is a better idea than taking Vitamin C supplements. However, unless deficiency of Vitamin C is the culprit, that should not help.

Feel free to write back.

Regards

Thank you, Dr. Saha. You're right. XXXXXXX Lal XXXXXXX son of Bhagabati and Gyana XXXXXXX was a very illumined master. I'm glad you've heard of him. Wonderful teachings. He brought such wisdom to the West. We were blessed to have him for in the US for over 30 years. I have benefitted greatly from his teachings over the last 35 years.

Thank you for the additional suggestions. I did experience the benefits of steam inhalation late yesterday when I finally felt up to taking a shower. I had to go to ER in the morning because my breathing problem became extreme when I had severe coughing fits. Their diagnosis is early pneumonia with the upper respiratory virus I had too. Citrus is good except it aggravates the arthritis that I have in many of my joints, so can't do that, thus the Vitamin C. Would massage along the sternum be beneficial? Since my problem is mostly bronchial, that's what I'm guessing that you are saying. They prescribed Doxycycline and cough gel caps for the pneumonia and resulting severe cough. If you have any other suggestions, I'd be interested to know about them. Have a wonderful week. XXXXXXX Storm

Brief Answer:
Chest physiotherapy shpuld help

Detailed Answer:
I am glad to know that you have benefited from the teachings of XXXXXXX Yogananda.

Massage over sternum may help but there are certain massaging techniques that should help. Googling out for 'chest physiotherapy' or checking videos on youtube should help.

Steam should help more than cough gels. Neverthless, you can take them. I am not sure that Doxycycline is a good choice for antibiotic in such a case. Amoxycillin or Azithromycin should be better. Discuss with your doctor.

Have a good time. Have a quick recovery.
