Brief Answer:
PTA, I/A. Change amikasin if these tests are abnormal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Get a PTA ( Pure Tone Audiometry ) and I / A ( Impedance Audiometry / Tympanometry ) tests done.

2. Amikacin usually causes hearing loss as it is ototoxic. Ear pain is likely to be due to some other cause such as an ear infection or ear pressure changes.

3. If these tests are normal, you can continue the treatment and check every few days.

4. Any alternative to amikacin should be based on culture and sensitivity reports.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Initially temporary, later irreversible. N-AC helps.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The ototoxicity of amikacin is initially temporary in the very early stages but will be irreversible later.

2. Ask your doctor to start n-acetylcystine (N-AC) to help delay ototoxicity if amikacin has to be continued.

3. The ear tests are also important to monitor the side effects.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Only some patients on amikacin develop hearing loss. There are many patients who safely complete their course of amikacin without any problem.

2. Please Ask your doctor to start n-acetylcystine (N-AC) to help delay ototoxicity if amikacin has to be continued.

3. Get the ear tests (PTA & I/A) done and upload the reports here or directly at bit.ly/Dr-Sumit-Bhatti
