Suggest Treatment For Severe Knee Pain
I am asking this question on behalf of my mother who is 59 years of age.
She had been experiencing knee pain in her left leg for the last 5/6 months.
Upon consultation blood test was taken which indicated RA positive. (report attached)
Further, medications were suggested. Details mentioned below.
Please advice for how long it is okay to take these medicines?
(a) Aceclofenac, Paracetamol and Serratiopeptidase Tablets
(b Allopurinol tablets
Does the test result indicate confirmed case of Arthritis? Or more tests should be done.
What other lifestyle modification could be tried to help in improving the situation.
osteoarthritis of knee
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr. XXXX,
Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through the medical history and the attached reports in detail.
Firstly,i do not see any signs of raised uric acid levels in the blood levels. So,there is no need of starting her on allopurinol as it can cause serious kidney problems.
Secondly, even though RA factor is minimally increased,it does not confirm Rheumatoid arthritis (RA factor more than 50 is significant).
Her knee pain is due to osteoarthritis (a physiological ageing disease due to cartilage degeneration in the knee joint).
A Xray / MRI of her knee joint will confirm this.
She should wear knee cap,do not squat or sit cross legged.
If she is overweighty, she needs weight reduction to reduce load on her knees.
Knee muscle strengthening exercises will help reduce her knee pain in long run.
She should avoid taking pain killer medicines like aceclofenac, paracetamol, serratiopeptidase for long periods of time as they can damage liver and kidney functions. These medicines should be taken only for severe pain.
Tramadol, piroxicam, etodolac etc are comparatively safer medicines.
I can help you better if you can post reports of her knee Xray or MRI here.
I hope this answer was useful to you.
You can ask me any further doubts that you may have.
Thank you.
