Question: We have a door that self locks. So not having the key on me I unwisely climbed through an open window and upon landing my left lower rib cage took a tremendous beating. Aside from the pain it popped last night. I think I may have fractured the left lower rib. Now I notice I'm bloating. Do you think I fractured a rib?

Brief Answer:
I don't think you have fractured rib.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
By your history and description, I don't think you have fractured rib.
But better to get done chest x ray to rule out rib fracture.
Rib fracture causes tremendous pain, skin redness, tenderness and breathing difficulty.
These all are absent in your case. So possibility of rib fracture is less in your case.
But get done chest x ray.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

What could have caused the popping sound? It was quite audible and accompanied with pain. That whole area (lower left rib area is quite painful). Could I have just bruised some ribs? I think the lowest rib (false rib) was the one affected the most. If the pain persist more than a couple of days I'll get an X-ray.
Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is mostly bruised rib.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
Yes, it is mostly bruised rib.
You should follow these steps for better symptomatic relief.
1. Avoid heavyweight lifting.
2. Avoid strenuous exercise.
3. Avoid painful movements of chest.
4. Avoid bad postures in sleep.
5. Start painkiller and muscle relaxant.
6. Apply warm water pad on affected site.
If not improving in 10days then get done chest x ray to rule out rib fracture.
Hope I have solved your query.
