Question: What is the best medicine or supplement to improve memory retention? I'm a 70 yr old executive type, very active in business, but suffering from memory loss...particularly nominal-aphasia (can't remember the word I want to use in speech). Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

There are several supplements which are thought to aid with memory. The most widely known one is gingko biloba which improves circulation in the brain's small vessels. Other potential memory boosters are omega 3 fatty acid, vitamin E, acetyl-L-carnitine, ginseng.

However it would be wise to be evaluated for your memory problems, have some neuropsychological tests to evaluate cognitive functions as well as some blood and brain imaging tests to exclude causes like tumor, stroke, metabolic deficiencies. If there is indeed cognitive impairment on tests then your doctor may prescribe dementia drugs like donepezil.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
