Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain And Swelling On Lower Back
Question: hello,
I am a 64 year old female,I am taking nitrofurantoin for a vaganal infection. after 3 days Of taking this drug I have developed a severe pain and swelling in my lower left back above my hip, could this be caused by this drug, should I be worried?

In my opinion the nitrofurantoin has side-effects like nausea, vomitings, anorexia commonly and joint pains and muscle pain and pareasthesias and other side-effects rarely.
Acute drug reactions like skin rash develop immediately after the first dose. The above said reactions might be a delayed reaction.
But the pain you are facing might not be due to nitrofurantoin. Usually nitrofurantoin is prescribed in cases of urinary tract infection. Renal stones lead to urinary tract infection. The pain in left back might be due to renal stones.
So I would suggest you to see your doctor who prescribed the drug and also get an ultrasound done to rule out any renal stones after discussing with the doctor.
And sometimes pain might be muscular origin which subsides on taking paracetamol tablet ,rest and hot fomentation.
Nothing to worry.
