Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Lower Legs Of A Child

Posted on Tue, 29 Nov 2016
Question: I have a 9 year old son that has now been complaining of severe pain in the lower left leg to the point he cries and moans. It typically is worse at night but does hurt during the day as well. This has been off and on for over a year and pushed off as growing pains but has been worse and frequently lately. My main worry is about 5 years ago he got very sick couldn't feel his legs and was almost flown to a children's hospital 5 hours away. We found out the attic in our house was full of toxic black mold and we promptly moved and he seemed to slowly be better now the leg pain is back in one leg and causing issues.

1. Is the pain associated with any joint swelling or redness? The knee will sometimes get a little swollen but not everytime and a slight redness but not bright redness you'd only see it if you were looking for it...

2. Is there any associated rash? No rash.

3. Is the pain accompanied by fever? Some nights a low fever of 99-100 some nights no fever

4. Is there any weakness of the legs at the time of pain? He refuses to walk or will whimper while walking on it during it...

5. Is there any family history multiple sclerosis or Guillain Barre Syndrome? No MS or Guillain Barre that I am aware of. His father does have Gorlins Syndrome we have yet to see a geneticist to test our son for it.

He has had a problem with vision changes and wetting the bed recently. We took him for a regular eye exam in 2015 and his vision was fine we took him back in Summer 2016 after having headaches and his vision had took a drastic change where he couldn't see the 3rd line on a regular eye chart. He had never wet the bed until recently and it was more when the leg pain was at it's worst.
