I am suffering Severe Reflux Esophagitis according to my endoscopy.
my doctor has given me Omeprazole 20 once in morning.
Is it a good dosage for me? should I increase it? how long it takes to effect?
do you suggest to take antiacids as well?
I have breathing difficulty as well. do you see them related? how I should take action to treat it?
Omeprazole 20 mg twice a day + Domperidone preparation
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,
Thanks for your query.
A. Reflux Esophagitis is caused due to irritation/ inflammation of the esophagus due to acid reflux from stomach.
The acid reflux is caused due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.
The refluxed acid sometimes enters into the respiratory tract and may cause breathing difficulty as mentioned in your post.
B. Medical management consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole (which prevent acid formation in stomach)+ Domperidone preparations (it strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux).
As you are taking Omeprazole 20 mg once in the morning and not getting relief, you need to take another 20 mg in the evening (to be taken 30 min before meals).
Antacid gel taken after meals will provide symptomatic relief.
Also add a Domperidone preparation along with it.
So, kindly consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist and get the medications.
It may require 8-12 weeks of medication to control the Esophagitis.
C. In addition, you need to follow certain diet & lifestyle measures, such as:
1. Dietary modification - avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
2. Lifestyle modification - like weight reduction (if you are overweight), sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
