Suggest Treatment For Severe Sinus Infection, Throat Pain And Hoarseness

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Sep 2015
Question: I have had a bad sinus infection 3 weeks ago. Went hoarse and just got voice back this past weekend. Now husband has brought in something new he says he saw no signs of infections in drainage just ached all over. So he knew it was viral. Never ran fever. Then yesterday my throat started hurting and hoarseness set in again and coughing up yellow/green mucus. When I blow nose no sign of infection clear! Just coughing up crap and sore throat. Husband looked at throat no signs of Streap. Glands not swollen in neck bad. Started taking muscinex last night when I started coughing and that's when yellow stuff started coming up. Could it be leftover infection in lungs? Can't take a deep breath and using breathing machine when chest gets tight. Buterol.

Brief Answer:
Workup needed if the symptoms persist despite treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Your description is most likely related to an upper respiratory tract infection. Though mucus composition and color alone is not a definite clue, its likely to be a viral infection. The greenish or yellowish mucus can occur in both bacterial and viral infections. However , in viral infections clear or whitish colored post nasal drip or nasal discharge is more commonly observed. A one week course for sinusitis is not adequate. In my clinical experience recurrences occur if antibiotics such as quinolones aren't used for at least two weeks. Tylenol, steam inhalation, anti histamines like levocetirizine, mucolytics (like mucinex) can be used as part of home treatment for now. However , if the symptoms persist or worsen then a superimposed bacterial infection should be ruled out. CBC, ESR, TLC, Chest x ray can be advised after a physical examination to prescribe treatment accordingly.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
