Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat And Low Grade Fever

Question: Hi! I week ago, I awoke with a very sore throat and low grade fever (99.5). Went to my doc and got a throat culture, which said i have rhino virus and haemophilus influenzae. I was put on azithromycin and told to rest/stay hydrated. For a few days following my appointment, I had typical cold symptoms (runny nose, swollen nodes, yellow/green mucus, slight fever, tired, etc.). Then all those symptoms disappeared, but my low grade fever (<=99.8) and fatigue remain. I went back to the doctor today, and she said my sensitivity came back and the haemophilus is resistant to azithromycin. I got rocephin IM and levofloxacin PO for 5 days. Should I be concerned that my fever, fatigue, and swollen lymph glands remain swollen? It's only been 7 days, but I've never run a fever for this long.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The swollen lymph nodes is entirely normal and expected as a normal reaction to this throat infection. With the infection lasting a little longer than it would have been if it weren't resistant to azithromycine.

Be relaxed and be confident. The right drugs have been prescribed and am pretty sure that all would soon return to normal as these current drugs have been guided by sensitivity studies which show that there is no resistance to them.

Keep me posted. I wish you well.

Hi Dr. Dita!

Thank you for your response. I took my first 750mg dose of levaquin last night and had a horrible reaction. It caused me to feel very anxious, dizzy, and hot/sweaty. I took it about 15 hours ago, but im still feeling the effects of the pill. I am not sure that I can continue with the next 4 doses. I am worried because I still feel very sweaty, hot, and anxious. I plan on telling my PCP this afternoon when I get off work. How long do you think these adverse effects will last? I'm miserable! Also- when should I begin to worry about my low-grade fever? Its been running about 99.3 for 8 days.

Thank you,
Alyssa

Brief Answer:
How are you feeling now?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Am sure this is a bit late but how are you feeling now? A lot better?

I will suggest that you do all possible and continue with this drug unless the symptoms are debilitating. This is because when a germ becomes resistant, you don't want to pass on a possible antibiotic that could be of help.

How are you feeling after the visit to your PCP yesterday?
