Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat And Nausea In A Child
Question: My 8 year old daughter had a severe sore throat which looked like the most severe case of strep throat I have ever seen her have (she's had it 4 other times in the last 7 months), went to walk in, she has had 10 days of Amoxicillin. The puss is gone out of her throat but the swelling is still quite intense and still has a raspy cough.
Severe headaches, nauseous, abdominal pain, fever is gone but she still is quite dizzy and tired. She has had green stool for at least a month.
Thoughts?

Brief Answer:
needs to be seen again
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
She may have gotten an intestinal infection like C. difficile colitis from the antibiotics so you need to have her stools checked for infection.
She should also have recovered from the pharyngitis and if her throat is still swelling she needs to be examined again by a doctor.
The other symptoms she is having like dizziness and fatigue may be due to the intestinal problems or she may have anemia or mononucleosis. Please take her to been examined by a doctor again soon and to get blood and stool studies to try and figure out why she has not recovered.

So, took my daughter (the one from my original question above) to the Children's hospital in Wpg on April 21st. They drew blood and Tested her for Mono but have not heard back so assuming it was negative. No stool test done. She is always thirsty and going pee way to often so they also did a glucose test - which they said was normal. (they are also referring her to a Ear/Nose/Throat doctor as she is sick so often...she has had strep 5 times in the last 7 or 8 months)
She is now commenting on how her chest hurts her...like something big is taking a bite out of her heart (that's her description).
Myself and my other daughter (10) have been extremely ill this past week with what I assume is the flu. We went to the doctor today and were put on antibiotics, my concern...
While there, the doctor mentioned that many children who have strep, come in complaining of chest pain. I never gave it much thought at the time since she doesn't have a sore throat (she is getting headaches though).
She had some blood work done about 2 months ago when she wasn't sick and I was told that there was a slight abnormality with her liver results..the doctor seemed pretty unconcerned.
Her class at school is a very difficult class (went through 3 teachers last year), so she has significant stress at school and with friends.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
XXXX

Only symptoms that I am aware of is chest pain and headache, no fever, says her throat hurts but there is no inflammation or redness. Stools are normal again, she does still get nausea but no vomiting.
No idea when we will get in to see the ENT, referral here can take up to a year.
Is it possible to have Strep but not have a sore throat?
Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Not strep
Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for your follow-up. With strep you really have to have a sore throat, fever and often swollen neck lymph nodes. she most likely just has a viral syndrome. Perhaps he is getting the flu. Make sure she stays well hydrated and give her acetaminophen for her chest discomfort. If she develops high fever and cough hen she would need to see a doctor again. I hope she is feeling much better soon.
