Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat In A Person With A History Of Tonsillitis
I have been getting severe sore throat almost week. Comes and goes. The pain is severe so it makes it hard to swallow. No fever. Tender to touch on my neck in the trachea region.
Blister like bump in the back of my throat, which now doesn't go away, but my throat hurts on the other side. No redness.
Went to my GP and she said it was strained vocal cords. But the pain comes and goes without me yelling or putting any strain on my vocal cords.
I suffered frequently from tonsillitis as a child. My tonsils look awful, but they never suggested removing them.
Thank you
Sorry. Meant to say, that I get a sore throat almost ever week for a couple of days.
Need more information for further comments.

upper respiratory infection or sinusitis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the reply.
In that case, you are likely to be having either upper respiratory infection (pharyngitis or epiglotitis) or acute sinusitis.
However,as I said earlier majority of cases throat pain are due to viral infection, but in some cases it could also be related to bacterial infection (like streptococcal pharyngitis) which must be investigated further.
So,if I would have your treating doctor,I would like to differentiate the cause through routine blood counts (CBC with differential counts,ESR) and throat examination with pharyngoscopy to rule out infective (especially bacterial) causes.
Therefore it would be advisable to see the doctor (preferably an ENT specialist) who will take complete medical history including history of sensitivity to antibiotics with thoroughly clinical examination of your throat and may order some routine blood works as I mentioned.
Your frequent problem of tonsillitis is also related to this viral or bacterial infection and if tonsils get repeated infected then it is better to remove it for which you may see another doctor (ENT specialist) for second opinion.
Meanwhile,you will require below treatment.
1) Antibiotics from which quinolones (levofloxacin 500 mg) would be preferred (to prevent super infection even if the cause is viral) with,
2) Analgesics (paracetamol) with anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen) combination (brand name:combiflam) two times daily for your severe throat pain which is available over the counter.
3) Antihistamines like levo-cetrizine 10 mg twice daily if you have a cough.
4) Nebulization with steam inhalation 2 to 3 times a day will help to resolve from post-nasal drip.
5) Start warm salt water gargles to reduce throat inflammation.
For antibiotics, you will need a prescription from some local doctor or ENT specialist and rest of other medicines will be available over the counter.
Hope this will help you, feel free to ask if you have more questions.
