Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In Left Abdomen

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: For the past week 1/2, I've had sharp pain in left abdominal area....(slightly north o f bellybutton & on my left side . I've been noshing Tums & swigging Pepto cuz I thought it an intestinal thing. But sometimes when I move I feel barfy & it really smarts.
Also, I was recently woken out of a dead, deep, REM sleep with crazy pain. No way can it just be ordinary stress....right?

What the heck IS it?!? I know appendix & other important gut-stuff is on the Right Side!

I'm not readily inclined to make Dr appts just for hysteria's sake.... Sooooo, waddaya think it IS ?!? Also... What tests should be run?

ps: I've always been pretty healthy , overall... so this is weird.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be a stomach inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
The organs in the area you described are mainly stomach and part of the large intestine.
The pain is likely to be an inflammation of the stomach especially if it is related to food. The pain on waking up also is suggestive.
There is a bacteria H. pylori which produces the inflammation and even a peptic ulcer. It would be good to check to see if you have this bacteria.
Other tests that would be helpful in determining the cause would be an upper GI endoscopy and an ultrasound examination.
Best wishes,

Ok, sooo... Since my biggest fear is needing a colostomy bag, I guess I'll go see my Dr, just to be safe. Thank you so much for your quick response.
