Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In Lower Right Abdomen

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: Hello, I am 49, female and fairly healthy. I have been noticing for a while that when I lie down, I often feel a kind of soft but evident type of knot or lump in my right abdomen between my hip and rib cage. When I touch it, I can move it around and sometimes lose it but it is not always there. I have also been experiencing lower abdominal pain that can become quite sharp and last for a couple of hours just left of the right hip bone and it feels like it's way down in there. I'm not a really thin person nor would I say overweight, just kind of normal. sometimes I feel these two things simultaneously I think.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

To recapitulate: Female/49 - fairly healthy - lump felt on lying down in right abdomen between rib cage and hip - movable - sometimes loose it and not always there - off and on sharp pain in the right lower abdomen - can last for couple of hours - - just left to the right hip bone - felt way down - sometimes feel both the things simultaneously ...

From the history your have provided, your problem looks to be:

- Hernia with obstruction. This is so as the lump is movable but is not always there, means the hernia might be getting 'reduced', but at the same time there may be a partial obstruction that can the sharp pain of few hours and the pain vanishes the moment the obstruction is relieved.

I would suggest you the following to get a correct diagnosis at the earliest and proper treatment as per the cause found:

Get a clinical evaluation by a General Surgeon as you will be examined and ordered investigations as per the clinical evaluation.
High resolution ultrasound, the time when you are in pain and the lump can be felt to get accurate diagnosis.

If required a CT scan of the abdomen may be done.
There can be other reasons too:

Lipoma as it is felt at the abdominal wall and is XXXXXXX And there can be another causes for pain in abdomen eg.

appendicitis, colitis, lymph node mass, Meckel's diverticulitis and diseases related to the ovary, Fallopian tube and so on.

This can be further detected or confirmed by Contrast enhanced CT scan of the abdomen.

I hope this answer helps you to get an early and proper diagnosis and proper treatment.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
