Question: I am an extremely health 62 year old man that exercises everyday. About a year ago, when I would run or bike long distances, I would develop sharp pain as acid in my stomach. I take an antacid before this type of exercise. Off and on I have had trouble, while exercising and would take my water with baking soda. In May, the acid indigestion was lasting longer periods of time. The acid indigestion seems to be rectified, now I am getting stomach pressure and bloating. I have taken tums to relieve and it helps a little. Went for a urea breathe test today to rule out h pylori. I having taking natural products and these help with my symptoms. I am not sure if the boating and abdominal pain are connected with gerd or ibs Thanks for any advice

Brief Answer:
A gastroscopy seems indicated at this point.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thank you for the elaborate history. What you describe can be caused by many things, e.g. hiatal hernia, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer, and irritable bowel syndrome, among others.

If the h. pylori test was positive, you should receive eradication therapy. If it was negative (and even if it was positive), I suggest you see a gastroenterologist for a gastroscopy to assess your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

I hope you find this helpful. Feel free to ask further.

Regards
