Question: I have been diagnosed with shingles. I have blisters on one side of my waist, but each day I get a burning pain in another part of my chest, arms and today the upper part of my left leg. A slight rash appears and then goes away, is that part of shingles?1

Brief Answer:
Shingles

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Herpes zoster is characterized by a unilateral vesicular dermatomal eruption, often associated with severe pain.Appearance of rash at one side of waist (corresponding to the thoracic dermatomes as especially T5 to T12, are involved in about 50 per cent of cases ) is characteristic of shingles.

Bilateral rash may appear on both sides in imuunocompromised persons(HIV infection, corticoid steroid therapy etc).
The occurrence of shingles without a rash has also been reported
In a few patients, characteristic localization of pain to a dermatome with serologic evidence of herpes zoster has been reported in the absence of skin lesions, an entity known as zoster sine herpetica.
Hence pain may appear on a side without appearance of rashes.

Rahes in shingles however remain for 3-5 days and replaced by slight scab. XXXXXXX nascent (quickly fading or disappearing ) rashes are unlikely in shingles.

However both HSV and coxsackievirus infections can cause similar dermatomal vesicular lesions. Supportive diagnostic virology and fluorescent staining of skin scrapings with monoclonal antibodies are helpful in ensuring the proper diagnosis.
You can go for these test of skin lesions to confirm diagnosis.A dermatologist consultation or service is required for this.
