Suggest Treatment For Short Periods Of Vertigo

Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: I have been experiencing bouts of vertigo and dizziness for a month. I had a head cold that lasted what felt like for ever and during that head cold i had 2 short periods of vertigo. It's been 2 months since that cold has been in my system. I have a lot of dizziness while walking. It feels like I'm rocking side by side. I've also experienced 2 longer bouts of vertigo where I felt like I was spinning which was frightening, one while I was at the movie theater enjoying my movie. I didn't feel anything coming all but suddenly I was spinning and had to leave the movie it lasted 2 hours . Then next one happened a month later while I was on my period which was quit heavy and that was the same sudden spinning sensation after using the restroom. I am iron deficient my hemoglobin is only 9 due to my period but it does this once in a while I am back taking iron now. I'm perimenopause. I haven't noticed diZiness with the anemia before and I've been anemic off and on for years I so frustrated with this it's making me afraid to drive to town. I went to a neurologist and he did a MRI with contrast with smaller cuts to see in the ear and it was normal as well as the EEG he did a brain stem study and he did say it was slow or abnormal but with MRI normal I'm not sure when he was thinking. I'm tired of the dizziness. I do hear popping in my right ear. Not sure why. It's more like a air suction thumping and it happened today a lot. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Brief Answer:
Impedance Audiogram.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. First get an Impedance Audiogram (Tympanogram) and a PTA (Pure Tone Audiogram) done. Upload the results.

2. Ear pressure changes (sice you have ear popping) after a cold can cause such symptoms.

3. If the I/A and the PTA is normal, further investigation will be required. It is good to hear that your MRI is normal because many conditions can be ruled out.

4. Anemia may worsen the dizziness. Get it treated.

5. The main causes of dizziness to be ruled out at the peri-menopausal stage are Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's Disease, Vestibular Neuritis (following a cold) and Cervical Spondylosis.

5. Direct examination by a Neurotologist is recommended.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
