Suggest Treatment For Shortness Of Breath, Depression And GERD

Posted on Tue, 31 Jan 2017
Question: I am 70 yrs old and think I am 35. I don't feel old in other words.
I used to work out with strength equipment and cardio with treadmill.
All my clothes were wet at the end o the hour.
Now I am doing Tai Chi. Within 10 minutes or so. I feel sweat coming from head. In 20 minutes I am stoked.
Occasionally I feel a little light headed. I drink while doing Tai Chi.
Is sweating a stand alone symptom of something I should explore? I take meds for heart, gerd, depression.
One last thing. I am finding periods of shortness of breath. Have had heart, pulmonary, checked. I apparently am good in all areas. ADD..
I wondered if the shortness of breath and sweating went together in a condition of disease I don't know about.

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your symptoms are not indicative of any serious medical disorder.

As all your heart and pulmonary tests have resulted normal, there is nothing to worry about.

Have you already performed a cardiac ultrasound?

Anyway, if the problem persists, I would recommend performing some other tests to investigate for some other possible causes:

- complete blood count for anemia
- blood electrolytes for possible imbalance
- thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid dysfunction
- kidney and liver function tests
- respiratory function tests (if you have not performed them yet)
- PCR, ESR for inflammation
- Vitamin D levels for possible deficiency.

A cardiac ultrasound would be necessary too, if you have not performed it yet.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

If the sweating and shortness of breath continue could it be

diabetes - my AIC is 4

or the upper chamber heart issue (my left lower chambers has occasional palpitations but when I eat potassium, it goes away (banana, spinach )

Hello again!

Your HbA1C levels are perfectly normal.

An electrolyte imbalance (low potassium levels) it is commonly associated to ectopic heart beats.

Anyway, I would recommend performing an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring to exclude possible cardiac arrythmia.

Cortisol plasma levels should be done too, to exclude possible adrenal gland disorder (considering low potassium plasma levels).

A close monitoring of your blood pressure is also necessary to exclude possible low blood pressure, which could lead to shortness of breath and sweating during physical exercise.

I would also encourage you to perform the above mentioned tests, including pulmonary function tests.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri

I forgot to tell you I am 100 lbs overweight which brings diabetes into the mix.

Thank you for your help. I will follow through on the tests you recommended.

My opinions as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Dear Salaam,

Being overweight could explain your clinical symptoms.

Besides, the fact that you have increased sweating leads to increased risk for low potassium levels and other electrolyte imbalance (because of the loss with sweat).

So, I would recommend consulting with a dietitian to help you losing some pounds. Sometimes physical activity is not the only thing to consider when we aim to lose some pounds, because it can impose your heart to a higher stress, especially when you are overweight.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Regards,

Dr. Iliri
