Suggest Treatment For Shortness Of Breath In A Diabetic
Question: Hello, Dr, Rynne, and thank you for responding... I am a female 66 years of age who has multiple health issues but manage my life reasonably well, considering. Today I took my prescribed dose of 160 mg of lasix, took my other meds somewhat late, and included potassium, magnesium, and zinc which I take when I take the lasix to prevent cramping, I, too, am a Type 2 diabetic and didn't eat much during the day because I was going out for an early dinner. I also have arthritis, am anemic, have been told I have mild COPD despite never smoking. Additionally, I have a sleep disorder (PLMD), have had CABG surgery after taking Vioxx with subsequent grafts collapsing and original arteries open again. (Happy and blessed to still be living!!!) Also, I have hypothyroidism with multinodular goiter suspected possibly of being a type of follicular thyroid cancer. Now, after too much history, this is what happened when I headed to dinner: Shortness of breath, feeling hot with perspiration, and a brief period of a pins and needles of the scalp and hands and arms. (Very clammy, pale, and needed fresh air. too.) My friend took me to an urgent care center which happened to be closed. Then we returned to the restaurant where I drank milk, lots of water, and ordered light food.) Prior to this I had taken 3 nitroglycerin tabs which offered some degree of relief. However, I have never before had the shortness of breath accompanied by the heat, perspiration, pins and needles situation. Any thoughts, advice, or possible conclusions? Could dehydration have been the culprit? Or, would my other health issues be more likely to have caused this unusual set of symptoms??? I am sorry that this is lengthy and complex. However, I again thank you for your expertise and look forward to your response. Appreciatively, Linda

Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.
Since you suffer from diabetes and ischemic heart disease (prior cabg surgery) your symptoms may be a warning sign for imminent cardiac events (including heart attack).
This is why I strongly recommend that you should call emergency services and should be properly evaluated from a physician to exclude any life threatening situation.
Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!
