Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Clonidine

default
Posted on Thu, 11 May 2017
Question: My 85 year old mother appears to be having a reaction to Clonidine. She's been taking it for about week. She has experienced confusion since beginning this medication. After taking her dose tonight (at around 10 pm CDT), she is experiencing substantial swelling of her feet, ankles, lower legs. She feels as if her face is swollen, but no significant swelling is visible. She believes her breasts are swollen as well. Otherwise, she seems alert, lucid, breathing normally and is not in distress.
She is allergic to many medications, so an adverse reaction is not particularly surprising. My question is, is the swelling a symptom that we should be concerned about, or should we expect it to pass as the medicine wears off? Does it represent any concern that would indicate we should go to an ER?

Brief Answer:
No need to go to ER at the moment

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

This has happened due to allergic reaction to the drug clonidine. This results in fluid retention in the subcutaneous tissues of the body causing the swelling.

Though this is related only to the drug,i would suggest you to stop this drug immediately and wait for next 48 hours.

The swelling should gradually subside.Take anti allergic tablets to fasten the recovery process.

The swelling will go away usually. If it doesn't,then you should consult your treating doctor.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.
