Question: My husband is on a number of RX meds and recently was given Benadryl, Claritin and Tussin DM to take for sx of cold with cough and a lot of mucus. He is complaining of auditory and visual hallucinations. How can we get these OTCs out of his system the quickest?

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I like to inform you that probably your husband got anticholinergic side effects due to use of multiple cold medications. This often happens because of advancing age and multiple medications over the existing illness.


I am sorry to inform you that there is no way to stop these side effects for a certain period which may last for 12-36 hours (as per my experience with elder patients) provided there is no cognitive decline till date.

The only thing you need to do is engaging him in one or another activity and giving lot of fluids. In addition it is important to stop further intake of any medication unless it is absolutely necessary.
