Brief Answer:
Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Yes, a cough can happen with a sinus infection or other situations where there are increased secretions in the sinuses. The secretions can drip down the throat and irritate the bronchi, causing a cough.

If, however, you have a cough that is productive of yellow sputum (not just when you get up after sleeping) and a fever, then you should go in to be seen and an X-ray would be appropriate in your evaluation.

If your sinus symptoms have been going on less than 3 weeks, there is a good chance you can get over it without an antibiotic. Consider using a steroid nasal spray such as Flonase. Guaifenesin (in Mucinex) is a good choice. Drink lots of water so that it can work well. You can also get Mucinex with dextromethorphan in it which can help suppress the cough.

If the Mucinex you are using contains guaifenesin only, you can add a decongestant. Pseudoephedrine is sold over the counter but requires that you ask the pharmacist for it. Best to avoid it at bedtime though as it can be stimulating for some people.

Saline sinus rinses can be helpful too. Don't use at same time as the Flonase though or the Flonase will end up just dripping down your throat from the saline. You can buy pre-made saline sprays. Stand over the bathroom sink and tip your head to the side and spray a stream into the top nostril. Repeat on other side. Don't blow hard or the secretions can back up into your ears.

I hope this information helps.
