Question: I have had a sinus cold for a week. I am still coughing up and clearing thick, green-yellow mucous, though not as much as in the early stages. Could I benefit from an antibiotic?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

Your symptoms sound consistent with a viral type of sinusitis. this sort of illness will usually run its course in about 7 to 10 days. It may last a couple days longer in some cases.

In your case I would suggest continued supportive care with good hydration and plenty of extra rest. can use over-the-counter cold remedies for symptomatic relief.

If you find that your symptoms are getting worse with associated fevers, chills, pain in the area of your sinuses and continued thick secretions then you might benefit from an antibiotic. would probably give it to her three more days before making this decision. We can do use antibiotics more often than needed which can contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Thank you again for sending your question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
