Question: Hi ,

My son accidentally spilt steam while vaporizing for his cold .
His skin slightly got burnt and small part got discoloured . We have taken the remedidal measures by applying burnol and application of ice . There was small blister also which broke automatically after ice application .
Are we on the right track or do we have to apply something else .

Brief Answer:
Superficial burn requires only local treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear
Welcome to the HCM,
Basically you are doing the right management.

Local application of any antiseptic cream like silverex etc. to be done( easily available with the near by chemist),

Cleaning of the surrounding area to be done with savlon.

Analgesics like paracetamol @ 15 mg /kg to given 4 to 6 hourly basis for the relief of pain.

Some times antibiotics may also be used if the raw area gets infected with consultation of the pediatrician.

Usually these are superficial burn ( also called as scalds) heal easily , little depigmentation may be there but later on it also vanishes with due course of time.

Hope the query is answered.
Please feel free for the further clarification
Thanks

glad to know that we are on the right track. since now he doesnt complain of any pain paracetomol is not needed .

forgot to ask one thing , can he take his regular bath or soap to be avoided . Should we take him to the doctor ?

But the area where is it is disfigured , will it regain it original color as he is very fair . Will a new skin come or are there any ointments for quick healing other than burnol. pls advise .

Brief Answer:
can take bath, color will be ok later on.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for appreciating my quick response.
He can take his bath and regular cleaning. After bathing clean the wound with betadine lotion and let it dry.

Discoloration of the skin gradually decreases with due course of time of its own, as the new epithelium layer regenerates from the below and the older upper layer is shed off.

Silverex cream ( silver sulphadizine) can be used in place of burnol.

Hope the query is answered.
Thanks

Hello doctor,

now that the burn has dried , please suggest that application of Silverex cream to be continued so that the patch disappears slowly.

Brief Answer:
plse give some time to recover.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
If the burn is dried then no need of silverex cream.
Some moisturiser cream may be applied.
Alternatively some home remedy may also be tried like (coconut oil mixed with little glycerine and two drops of honey) to be applied locally over the scar for a long time so that scar heals properly.
colour of the skin may take some time to recover as the fresh layer of skin gradually comes up from beneath the older layer as a normal process.
Hope the query is answered.l
Thanks.
