Question: My daughter had a breakout of hives last weekend over Christmas. We went to the pediatric walkin clinic 2 days in a row. first day they gave her a topical oil steroid for her skin, 2nd day the MD gave her prednisone for the 5 days and a stronger antihistamine atarax to take in case she was itching to be used instead of benedryl along with the topical oil steroid for the skin. THe hives went away during the week but as the steroids were almost finishing up, the swelling began around her feet hands, neck back, heavy on her chest and aound her eyes. she has been complaining overnight about skin discomfort, aching andtenderness to all of her joints and skin to touch, her hands feel puffy as well as all of those areas of her body. she was eating and drinking fairly well over the last few days, voiding and stooling normally. just feeling achy and fatigued. I'm not sure what this is..could she have mono?

Brief Answer:
Its not mono

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

What you are describing cannot be mono because she would have sore throat and swollen lymphnodes. The rash in mono comes after taking an antibiotic (Amoxicillin), but in general should not have a rash.

I think the treatment they have given you its the right one. If she is not better after the treatment with steroids is finished, then maybe you should see the doctor again so they can give a longer treatment and you can taper it when she is better.

Hope this is helpful.
