Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Upper Respiratory Infection

Question: HI

I have feel very tired as if I have a "cold" - the only other symptom I have is a sore roof of my mouth extending from near my throat to around the inside of my teeth. Usually when I get a cold of flu I have a sore throat I still have my tonsils. I had a very bad cold at the beginning of XXXXXXX but it cleared up. thanks

perhaps I should have mentioned I have a aorta synosis (Sp?) one of tricuspid valve does not open all the way - told it has no effect - I just finished xc skiing in with a pack with high school kids and kept up to them

Based on the history you have shared, it seems as if you are suffering from an acute attack of upper airway infection and it may need anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine alongwith analgesics or anti inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If symptoms persist or accompanies with fever or severe lethargy or purulent greenish sputum, you may need a course of antibiotics like augmentin or azithromycin.

Meanwhile XXXXXXX warm saline water gargles and steam inhalations will help. Taking hot beverages like coffee can also help.

It has very less to do with the heart finding as you had mentioned, which can appear with age too but only if shortness of breath on lying down or exertional shortness of breath appears as that can need a chest Xray and signs of fluid overload in lungs.

Hi Thanks

I do not have any symptoms in throat or lungs, just whole roof of mouth. I have mild lethargy and no fever. I am at my farm about 100 km from my doctor - do you think I should see him in case I need antibiotics or do you think it is viral? I mentioned my heart in case you thought it might be some thing that could also infect it. I have Advil, salt and echonecia tea here.

Yes you can wait for the antibiotics for a day or two with supportive measures like steam inhalations, Saline water gargles, anti histamine like cetrizine or loratidine and analgesics like acetaminophen as we have discussed in detail already about that. But if fever sets in or things get worst despite the supportive measures, antibiotics may become inevitable.

I am feeling better now - The saline gargles helped. What concentration salt should you use - and should you rinse with water or drink something afterwards or let the salt stay there for awhile
