Question: Sudden Sharp stabbing pains in the head last night like I've never had before. They have not gone away and have gotten worse throughout the day and spread to the jaw. They only last a few seconds. I feel a little bit nauseous and tonight I feel a bit out of it. I suffer from Anxiety. In addition i have had joint pain and muscle aches for the past two weeks. I am currently taking .75 mg of klonopin a day for the past two weeks. I had an Mri and ct scan two weeks ago both were clear. I also had a couple of blood tests both came back normal. I was wondering whether i should go to the ER.

Brief Answer:
Take medications as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Sharp pain over head may be due to tension type headache.
Is there any associated nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound?
Any aggravating factors?
Any associated redness of eye , tearing nasal stuffiness.
You can take Amitryptiline or Sertraline for releif along with Clonazepam after proper prescription by your local physician.

As recent MRI is normal, nothing serious seems to be there. You can consult a doctor in ER if headache is severe and bothering.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

There is some nasal stuffiness. Some nausea and sensitivity to light and sound but i have not vomited yet.The sharp stabbing pain is also around my right eye occasionally and my lower right jaw and right forehead above my right eye. One of my pupils is larger than the other and my eyes are a little bit bloodshot. no eye tearing. I do not have double vision and my vision seems to be relatively clear. I am only slightly dizzy. I also have slight ear pressure/pain which has intensified since the stabbing pains started last night. The pain is more blunt/dull than severe and is not constant. It seems to correspond with certain movements i make with my body. This is occurring with aches in other parts of the body. I fear the pain will only get worse as the night goes on. Last night I awoke multiple times for the first time in years(guessing from the pain). I have not had any major trauma recently.Physically I don't feel particularly weak. At what point should i go to the ER? What signs should i watch out for? I also had a doppler and an EEG done which both came back normal two weeks ago. What could be possible causes? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of SUNCT

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There is possibility of short unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing ( SUNCT).
You should get evaluated by a neurologist.
You can try Topiramate as it works both in migraine and SUNCT.
You can consult ER if headache increases.
Take pain killers also for releif.

Could my neck or back be causing these sharp/dull pains in the top of my head? the pain in my neck is significantly worse where my carotid artery is. The pain in my right jaw seems to have gotten worse since last night but is also not constant. Also the head pain I'm experiencing is literally only sharp when i make certain movements such as tilt ing my head back or if i stare at the screen to long. Should i request another CT scan or MRI from the neurologist? or is two weeks not enough time for something serious to develop(likely). This doesn't feel like a migraine. Lastly what additional tests would you suggest i ask my neurologist about? I will ask my doctor about SunCt.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Get investigated as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Neck pain can only involve back of head and unlikely to involve top of head.
Facial pain, with neck pain can also occur in giant cell arteritis.
No need to go for repeat imaging of brain if recent Mri was normal. Unlikely to be serious issue.
Neck xray or Mri and ESR can be done.
If significant tenderness is present over carotid then go for carotids doppler study too.
