Suggest Treatment For Strong Urge To Urinate Along With Blood In Urine

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Nov 2016
Question: after the seed implant which was 12 weeks ago I had a problem emptying my bladder completely so I was prescribed Tamsolusin which helped tremendously but now I pee after drinking any kind of liquid and I leak if I can't urinate in a timely matter. How long will I not be able to control my strong urge to urinate? Will this condition improve or is it a condition I will have to deal with from this point on? Also now I see a little blood in my urine.

Brief Answer:
It's irritation of prostate/ urethra. Mostly resolve in 6-12 months.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Thanks for the query under Health care magic platform. I have read it & understand the gravity of your concern. I have an impression that you were subjected to the treatment for prostate cancer.
Actually seed implantation is a form of implantation of radioactive iodine in prostate tissue & it is observed to be as effective as operative or external radiotherapy.

* The urinary symptoms like frequency or incontinence are due the irritation of prostate/urethra/bladder- as aside effect of the implantation & tends to resolve in majority of cases within 3 to 6 months. Some times it can bother the patient up to 2-3 years. The blood in urine you have recently noted can be due to irritation of urethra- still you are advised to consult your doctor for it.

The symptoms of frequency can be usually managed well ( as in your case) by drug like Tamsulosin (which your currently taking) - which helps clearing the urine passage . This drug is to be stopped after the frequency stops.. in case of prolonged use incontinence may result.
There are many other specific drugs ( alpha blockers/ injectable gel form medicines in urethra to increase urethral resistance) available to control the condition.

* So thinking positively that the problem would disappear within 6 months - 1 year at the most & managing the problem with expert advise /self care till then would help you.

Please consult your operating Oncologist/ Urologist for-

- Examination/specific medication to control the symptoms till they disappear/ discontinuation of Tamsolusin.
- Regular assessment of the basic problem resolution wold you keep you on right track on way the to healing.

I hope the answer is both informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.
