Suggest Treatment For Subclinical Hypothyroidism

Posted on Mon, 27 Mar 2017
Question: Hi there, I am a 32 years old female, I've been diagnosed with subclinical Hypothyroidism. I have a doctor appointment in 2 weeks, but I am stressed and I don't understand what does this mean. What is subclinical Hypothyroidism? is it dangerous?is it curable? do I need to stay away from certain food? any supplements? I haven't received the test numbers yet. I also have low levels of vitamin d. I am very scared and can't sleep.
more info: I recently moved from a hot weather country (40+ celsius) to a cold country (-15-20 celsius), I am not sure if this is relevant.

Brief Answer:
It means a milder form of hypothyroidism!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This means that your hormone levels show that you need higher levels of stimulating hormone of the thyroid to be able to produce and maintain a good level of thyroid hormones. In most persons, they will go on to develop full hypothyroidism.

The decision on whether to treat or not depends on how high the values are. If for example, it is greater than 10, you will be given hormonal supplements. Hypothyroidism can be totally and conveniently managed. There is no fear about management difficulties.

For now, be calm. A totally well understood and treatable condition.

I hope this helps, I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Thanks a lot for your answer, I feel better and more relaxed now. Googling didn't do me any good.

Just one more thing. Any relation between vitamin d deficiency and the subclinical hyperthyroidism?

Brief Answer:
NO relationship between the two.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for letting me know this has been helpful.

There is no relationship between vitaminD deficiency and subclinical hypothyroidism. Though you may have both conditions, there is no causal relationship between them.

Google....Is equally bad as good. Let the experts guide you through by separating the chaffs from the substance and making your response personalized and helpful.

Hi doctor,

I spoke to a doctor today about my results. He apologized for sending me a confusing letter that stated subclinical hyperthyroidism. So they informed me that I have subclinical HYPOtherodisim (I was a bit irritated and angry about the typo). Anyhow my TSH is 7.7 and all others are in the normal range.

Is this number concerning?

Answered by Dr. Ivo Ditah (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
That number confirms subclinical hypothyroidism!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This confirms the diagnosis because you do not present symptoms. Treatment at this time is not urgent. Monitor this in 6months if you have no symptoms. if you have symptoms in the interim like excessive sensitivity to cold temperatures, fatigue, dry skin, constipation, etc., I will suggest that you seek hormonal replacement therapy at that time.

I wish you well. As always, am at your service.
