Suggest Treatment For Subclinical Hypothyroidism

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: Hello,
I was diagnosed with sub clinical hypothyroidism last month since my TSH level was 6.95. My doctor advised me to start taking thyronorm 25mcg. Since then my TSH level has reduced to 2.95 but I got my periods a few days early (23 days as opposed to 26 days) and I have put on weight around my waist. Is the medication the cause for these symptoms? My anti thyroid antibodies ( Anti Thyroperoxidase: 12.4, Anti body to Thyroglobulin: 71.8) levels are well within range. Do I need to continue the medication in the long run? Will my condition progress to Hypothyroidism if I discontinue the medication?

Brief Answer:
Your medication is not the cause for your weight gain

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Thanks for asking in Healthcaremagic forum
I am Dr(Maj) Deepak S Jois(Retd) answering your query

Hypothyroidism causes weight gain. Your medication Thyronorm is not the cause for your weight gain, and in fact it corrects it. Your doctor has made a right decision in advising you Thyronorm as you had high TSH levels.

Though TSH has come down within normal range now, you need to continue tablets as the effect on TSH is due to medication. If you stop this you can have symptoms of hypothyroidism. Your periods get normalized once you start taking this medication regularly. Usually medication is continued for long time (life time) and you will find reduction in weight after some time. Please wait till then.

Hope I have answered all your query. All the best.
