Suggest Treatment For Sudden Seizures In A Child While On Oxetol
My daughter aged 4 years 10 months vomited immediately after she went to bed on 23 XXXXXXX 16 and was not able to stand on her own and she seamed to be confused and also her eyes were looking upwards.
Consulted a pediatric neurologist as advised by them we had a EEG done and the EEG report was normal. Still the doctor has put her under oxetol 150 Mg twice a day for two years . Since taking this tablets she gets irritated and has become forgetful and lacks concentration.
Kindly advise is there a way out of this tablets and what are the other alternative options available for treatment of this seizure.
May be shifted to other anti epileptic
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query
The symptoms you have mentioned are suggestive of seizure.EEG may be falsely negative.
As this was the first episode, seizure was not life threatening and EEG is also normal, one can observe the child.
But most of the doctors dont want to take risk and start antiepileptic.
Oxetol contains oxcarbazepine and is given to control partial seizures.
Side effects are uncommon if given in appropriate dosage. The common side effects are nausea, vomiting, dizziness, rashes etc.Lack of concentration and forgetfulness can also occur but are less common.
If you have noticed that irritability, forgetfulness and lack of concentration is significant you may consult your neurologist for change of anti epileptic like valproic acid (it is a very good medication to control all types of seizure).
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to ask further queries of you have any.

Thanks for addressing my concerns.
My worry is about the dosage of the tablet Oxetal 150 Mg as my daughter is school going and she finds the side effects of the tablet causing her utter discomfort and irritation.
Please advise me what should be the ideal dosage of oxetal 150 Mg for my daughter who is 4 years 10 months and weighs 16 kgs.
Can she get acclimatized to this medication and if so, how many weeks it will take for her to get acclimatized to the tablet
A worried parent eagerly waiting for your reply
The dose is appropriate
Detailed Answer:
Hi
The dose of oxcarbazepin is 15-30 mg/kg/day in two divided dosage.
The weight of the child is 16 kg,so 150 mg tablet of Oxetol twice a day is appropriate for her (about 19mg/kg/day).
Side effects are very uncommon at this therapeutic dose. But if there are significant symptoms causing disturbance in daily activities other antiepileptic should be given.
I don't think one needs to be adjusted with the medication if there is significant problem.Rather I would prefer to change the medication.
